Here are a few things to consider when starting a new online business.


Make sure that you plan your ecommerce website design right down to the web pages that you require, the text that you would like to appear in each and every section of the website (we can help with this) and the competition.

Target audience

Know your customers is one of the most important parts of any business and an e-commerce website is no different. Why not try to organise some focus groups so that you can understand what your potential customers want from a website. What products do they like, things to steer clear of etc.

Make sure that you understand what you customer wants and how best to offer your products.


You can purchase your products from a number of different sources such as:

  • Manufacturers
  • Whole Sale
  • Distributors
  • Auctions

These are just a few sources, there are more if you research these online. Generally the more people ‘in the middle’, the less mark up you will be able to make.

Payment system

Marketing plan

This is the part that most start-ups ignore, you must have a marketing plan and more importantly you must see it through. Realistically you need to have a budget allocated on a monthly basis. Its money well spent because the plan is to recoup the money that you spend. For example, if you spend £300.00 per month on SEO (See our SEO blog post for more) for 6 months, you could appear on page 1 of all the major search engine for 10 keywords.

Depending on the keywords, you could drive thousands of new potential customers to your website. The best thing is that the customers will be targetted so only the people that are looking for your products will find you.
